Economically |
There is always an economic incentive in placing "beautiful" women on magazines, billboards, in commercials, sports games, and other various sources of entertainment. However, the focus should be shifted off portraying women as objects to be sexualized. Rather, corporations should understand the negative effects and stigma which arise from the constant perpetuation of beauty standards.
Companies can be more inclusive by including women of different races, sizes, and those with disabilities. Currently, beauty standards means that there is only an exclusive group of women which is portayed in the media. By exposing the women in the world to all of the different types of women there are, they will feel more comfortable about themselves. |
Socially |
It's hardwired into society that there's a specific definition for what is beautiful. We need to change this by showing everyone that beauty comes in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. There should be a shift from relying on beauty as a way to judge a person to less material and tangible concepts such as personality and experience. Creating standards of beauty has only shown to harm the self-esteem of women all around the world. By pushing for a social change in the way we perceive beauty around us, we are one step closer to creating an environment where women are truly comfortable with themselves.
